How To Begin Debt Reduction

Reduce Your Debt, Reduce Your Stress

Debt sucks, it’s the honest truth.  If you are having problems keeping up with your bills or are just tired of not ever feeling like you are getting ahead on your bills, you know this fact.  There is hope.  You can reduce your debt if you take the right steps to get it down and manageable.  The words “reduce debt” sound great.  Just like “reduce stress” do equally.  The trick is getting it done.  Learn the simple steps to getting going on reducing your debt now.

Assess Your Debt Situation

Don’t ever find yourself in debt denial.  Debt denial is not realizing that you are falling behind and not keeping up with your debt and bills.  Take a long cold hard look at all your bills, both ones you are making payments on and any you may have let fall to the wayside.  Add them up and see how much your creditors are looking for from you on a monthly basis.  Now add up your total monthly income after taxes.  If applicable include any other sources of income such as rental property, settlements, etc.  Compare the two.  Are you seeing more going out than coming in?  Fear not, it’s a problem for sure, but now that you are facing it you can start addressing it.

List Your Bad Debts

The next step in reducing your debts is prioritizing them from the most expensive types of debt to the least.  This is done with the interest rates, or APR.  Don’t worry at this stage about the big bills versus the little ones.  Focus on high interest.  Take this list and run it from top to bottom, highest interest to lowest.  Start at the top and this will be your focal point to start working directly with your creditors or with the aid of a credit counselor to reduce these debts one by one.
