How To Find A Debt Management Company?
With dozens of credit counseling companies, it’s often difficult to pick the best company. Some companies may charge high fees causing your debt to increase. Learn five tips for choosing the best debt management company.
Go To Your Local Bank Or Credit Union
Ask your local banker if they recommend any firm. Banks and credit unions keep lists of accredited debt management agencies that are licensed in your state.
Find Out What Fees Are Involved
Some non-profit credit counseling agencies require you to make contributions to their organization. Realistically, these are simply fees for their service. If they do require fees, ask them what happens if you cannot afford their fees. This is a tell-tale way to know if they are there to make money or to help you get out of debt.
Ask For Free Information
Any respectable credit counseling company will offer free information before asking for your personal information. If the credit counselor asks for your financial or personal information before sending information, hang up.
Make Sure You Agree To The Payment Terms
Once you’ve given the debt management company your information, make sure you are comfortable with the consolidated payment. If the payment will require you to live on a tightened budget that you feel is impossible to meet, look elsewhere for help.
Consider what would happen if you suddenly lost your job. Make sure the payment is doable even on a reduced income.
Written Terms of Service Are Necessary
Any debt management company must offer a written contract. This protects you if they suddenly change your interest rate or change payment amounts. Make sure you’ve read the contract, agree to all of the terms and receive an original copy with everyone’s signature, both yours and the company’s.
If any verbal agreements are made after the contract is signed, have the contract amended. If they refuse, do not agree to any new terms.
