How To Get Creditors Off Your Back?

Obviously if you’re reading this, you’re not looking for the simple answer on how to get creditors off your back – which is, of course, to pay them. However, if you don’t have the funds to pay off your debt, there is an alternative option. Federal law provides for something like a personal “Do Not Call” list just by sending a letter to your creditor.

Preventing All Communication From a Creditor

In short, once you send your creditors a letter requesting they cease all communication, they are legally obligated to never contact you again – with two exceptions. They can send one last letter or one last phone call letting you know they will not send letters or call again (anyone else catch the irony in that?), and they can contact you if they take new action on your account, like file a lawsuit.

Obviously this doesn’t eliminate the debt or prevent them from filing suit to collect on the debt, but it does get them to stop bugging you in the middle of dinner. Eventually you might want to consider paying them though.

Tips And Precautions

Before sending the letter, make a copy to keep for your records, and send the original via certified mail making sure to pay the fee for a return receipt. The return receipt will let you know when they got your letter and are therefore legally obligated to cease all communication. Once that is done, just file the copy of the letter and receipt in case they try to harass you.
