How To Negotiate Debt Settlement?

Negotiate Debt Settlement To Save

In order to save money on the amounts you currently owe, there is an option to get out from underneath your bills and retain your positive credit history: negotiate.  A debt settlement process is similar to any negotiation.  Both parties are going to work out a solution that they both can agree to.  To negotiate a debt settlement the agreement is between the debt issuer, or creditor, and the borrowing party, you.  In a debt settlement negotiation you can expect to save anywhere from 10-40% or more on what you currently owe.  The mitigating factors which can affect how much you are able to save are:

Your negotiating skills, or those of your debt negoitating company working on your behalf.

The age of the account.  Older accounts can typically get a better discount as the companies have either written these accounts off or have left them to collections.

The size of the amount you owe.  The larger the debt the more you can most likely get reduced off of it.

Your personal debt situation.  If your case is more dire and it is more than likely that you will leave the account to default or include it in a bankruptcy petition, this can work to your advantage.

Tips In Negotiating A Debt Settlement

When you negotiate your debt in a debt settlement, remember above all to have realistic expectations and demands. If you start out asking for too much off your debt, you will likely get shown the “door” and not assisted by your creditor.  In order to be taken seriously, be reasonable.  Be prepared to make immediate and complete payment on the amounts you owe once there is a settlement reached.  A core component of the settlement process is the commitment you will make to pay off the agreed upon final payment amount immediately to your creditor.
