How To Solve Debt Problems
At this point in our economy, debt problems plague most Americans. Whether it is not being able to keep up with the mortgage, having to trade-in a car for a less expensive model, or watching interest rates climb on credit card debt, you or a loved one have probably experienced debt problems with the past year. The rules used to be simple – make your payments, don’t fall behind, and you would have a good credit score and be able to access financing easily. Today, even people with excellent credit scores are faced with double digit interest rates on credit cards and dropping home values mean many people are underwater on their mortgage. Solving debt problems does not have to be difficult and be accomplished through a series of small steps. In the words of Lao Tzu, “A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.”
Tips On How To Solve Debt Problems
1. Although you have heard it time and time again, you must stop creating new debt. Cut up your credit cards, don’t open new accounts, and only buy what you can afford. The only way to solve debt problems is to stop the debt cycle.
2. Put any extra money you have available to your debt account with the highest interest. If this amount is only $10, send in an extra $10. At this point, it is not so much about making large payments as it is about creating discipline, a sense of accomplishment, and taking steps in the right direction.
3. Scour your monthly expenses for any extra cash you can. Can you stop by Starbucks less? Can you eat a few vegetarian meals a week, which are usually less expensive? Can you buy generic shampoo for a month? Use this extra cash to make debt payments.
4. Look for extra income. Can you take on a small part time job, even if it is just over the holiday weeks? Do you have anything you can sell on Craigslist or eBay? Look forc creative ways to earn extra income. Since it “extra,” dedicate it entirely to debt payments.
