How To Write A Letter To Debt Collectors To Stop Calling?

Ask Debt Collectors To Stop Calling

There may be times when a debt collector is calling you so much that you don’t know where to turn.  You may have repeatedly asked them to stop calling, to no avail.  You may be frustrated, angry, and stressed.  Although a debt collector is legally allowed to contact you regarding a debt, you have legal protections.  By becoming knowledgeable of these legal protections, you can save yourself the stress that often comes with debt collectors.  One method to require that debt collectors stop calling you is to send a “cease communication” letter.

According to the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act, [15 USC 1692c] Section 805(c): CEASING COMMUNICATION:

” If a consumer notifies a debt collector in writing that the consumer refuses to pay a debt or that the consumer wishes the debt collector to cease further communication with the consumer, the debt collector shall not communicate further with the consumer with respect to such debt.”

Cease Communication Letter Example

A letter requesting a cease communication does not have to lengthy or fancy.  Here is a brief example that can you fill in with your details:

Dear [Creditor],

According to the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act, [15 USC 1692c] Section 805(c): CEASING COMMUNICATION:

” If a consumer notifies a debt collector in writing that the consumer refuses to pay a debt or that the consumer wishes the debt collector to cease further communication with the consumer, the debt collector shall not communicate further with the consumer with respect to such debt.”

This letter will hereby serve as notice that I wish you to cease further communication with me, including my work, personal, and cell phone numbers.  If you do not comply with this request, I will contact my State Attorney General for further assistance.  Please direct all correspondence with me to postal mail.

Be sure to sign the letter and send it certified mail.  Because you are protected by the Fair Debt Act, now you can be at ease, knowing that your phone calls will be limited to your friends and family!
