A debt management program is typically the first weapon, or method of credit assistance, to be used against your debt. Debt Negotiation: With debt negotiation, a credit counselor will contact, on your behalf, all the companies whom to which you owe money. The outstanding debts will be negotiated, where possible, to lower amounts, depending on the creditor’s willingness to bargain. Additionally credit counseling through debt negotiation can work to lower or even eliminate overdue payment fees, late fees, overdraft fees, etc. Debt Settlement: In debt settlement, a credit counselor will determine what you owe to each creditor and also your ability to pay. A settlement amount will be reached between these two differing amounts that all parties will hopefully agree to. In debt settlement your bills are lowered because they are paid off in a single lump sum for a lesser amount. Debt Consolidation: Very similar in practice to a debt settlement. Credit counselors will use the settled amount from the debt settlement process to then find you a new loan. This new loan, the debt consolidation loan, will then be used by the credit counseling service to make close-out payment on all your outstanding bills that were included in the debt consolidation.
