What Happens If I Dont Pay My Telephone Bills?
Although most people these days rely on cellular phones, land line numbers are still a necessity for most families. As such, if you don’t pay telephone bills for a land line, you may still get service. Reason being, land line telephones are considered a utility so if you have children or dependents the telephone company can’t legally shut off your service.
However, if your unpaid telephone bills stack up too high, you may not be able to get service again until you repay the telephone company. The fact of your default also could get reported to a credit bureau and leave a nasty mark for the next 7 years.
Unpaid Cell Phone Bills Are A Different Story
Unfortunately, cellular phones are considered a luxury commodity, and therefore unpaid cell phone bills will result in service cut-off. In addition, you could end up with an ugly mark on your credit report, calls and mail from collection agencies, and a hefty chunk of late fees to repay.
Like the land line telephone bills, the bad marks from unpaid cell phone bills will remain on your report for 7 years – even if you settle or later pay the balance.
Delaying Consequences of Unpaid Telephone Bills
You can, however, negotiate with the cell phone or land line telephone companies and ask for a bit more time to make good on the unpaid phone bills. Do be sure to get any agreements in writing though, especially if they promise not to report bad payment history to the credit bureaus.
