Will A Department Store Credit Card Help My Credit?

How A Department Store Credit Card Can Help

If you’ve ever shopped at a major department store, you probably know that applying for one of their credit cards can be beneficial to you in many ways. It can get you an initial discount, get you access to certain specials and even nab you deals not offered to other customers. But a department store credit card can also help you with your credit. Despite the fact that many department store credit cards have low credit limits, they are a great way to help those with little or no credit to build up more credit over time. In general, you can use the cards to purchase low-cost items like clothing, shoes or even appliances and then pay them off almost immediately. This shows that you are able to handle using credit and this could impact your credit score on your credit report in a positive way.

How Much A Department Store Credit Card Can Help

Though a credit card from a department store can help your credit score, it’s also important to remember that not all department store credit card limits have high credit limits. Therefore, it’s not going to improve your score dramatically. Unless if you’re extremely loyal to a particular department store, there’s also a good chance you could go months and maybe even years before shopping trips to a particular store. So you cannot rely solely on a department store credit card to help your credit. But it’s a good first step for those looking to either build their credit up from scratch or help repair their credit over time.

Using A Department Store Credit Card Correctly

Though a department store credit card can help you, you also must remember that it can hurt you should you fail to pay off your debt over time. If you have a department store credit card, try and pay off your balance within one or two months of using the card. Also, try and keep your balance at around 20 percent of the total credit limit to avoid getting in over your head in debt. And unless you struggle significantly with debt and it would help you to do so, don’t cancel your department store credit card once you pay off the balance. This could actually hurt your credit. But when used properly, using a department store credit card could help your credit.
